Signs it might be trauma
Trauma responses commonly fall into four categories:
Re-experiencing
Flashbacks, intrusive memories or dreams, and physical reactions (a racing heart, sweating) when something recalls the event.
Avoidance
Staying away from places, people, or things that are reminders of what happened, or avoiding thinking or talking about it.
Arousal & reactivity
Being easily startled, feeling on edge, trouble sleeping or concentrating, and sometimes risky or reckless behavior.
Cognition & mood
Trouble remembering parts of the event, and persistent negative feelings -- fear, guilt, shame, or a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy.

Approaches we use
No single approach fits everyone -- which one makes sense depends on the kind of trauma, how long ago it happened, and what's worked or hasn't for you before.
A VA/DoD 'Strong for' first-line recommendation for PTSD. Structured, eight-phase reprocessing of traumatic memory -- you don't have to narrate the trauma in detail.
Trauma-focused CBT approaches are also first-line PTSD treatments, working through how thoughts and beliefs formed around the traumatic event.
Uses fixed eye positions to access and process trauma held in the body and nervous system.
Works with body sensation to release stored physiological trauma responses, rather than focusing on narrative alone.
Combines talk therapy with body awareness to address trauma stored in the nervous system, particularly for developmental trauma.

Self-pay sessions are $120-$150 for a standard 50-minute session. See the full cost breakdown or the Colorado Medicaid coverage guide.

Frequently asked questions
Does insurance cover trauma therapy in Denver?
Usually. We're in network with Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Colorado Access, Kaiser Permanente, Aetna, Anthem BCBS, and Carelon. It's billed as standard outpatient psychotherapy, so most plans that cover mental health cover it.
What's the difference between trauma therapy and regular talk therapy?
General talk therapy often works through understanding and discussion. Trauma-focused approaches like EMDR, Brainspotting, and Somatic Experiencing also target how the memory or sensation is physically stored, which is why the intensity attached to it can change even before the story about it does.
Can trauma therapy be done over telehealth?
Yes -- we offer telehealth statewide across Colorado, in addition to in-person sessions in Lakewood and the Denver metro.
How do I know which approach is right for me?
That's exactly what the free consultation is for. Different approaches suit different people and different kinds of trauma, and a clinician can talk through options with you before you commit to anything.
