Finding the Right Trauma Therapist in Lakewood, CO: A Guide to Healing PTSD and Complex Trauma
Finding the Right Trauma Therapist in Lakewood, CO: A Guide to Healing PTSD and Complex Trauma
Trauma changes the way we see the world, how we connect with others, and how safe we feel in our own bodies. If you’ve been searching for support, you may already know how overwhelming it feels to sort through therapists, treatment styles, and endless jargon online. At Elephant in the Room Trauma Counseling, based in Lakewood, Colorado, our mission is to make this process simpler, more supportive, and rooted in real healing. This guide will walk you through what to look for in a trauma therapist, what treatment options work best for PTSD and complex trauma, and how to begin the journey toward recovery.
Why Specialized Trauma Therapy Matters
Not every therapist has training in trauma. While general counseling can be helpful, trauma requires approaches that work directly with the nervous system, memory processing, and the body’s stress responses. Without this, therapy can feel like “talking in circles” without real relief. Trauma-informed therapy helps you:
Regulate the nervous system so you feel safer and calmer.
Reprocess painful memories without becoming overwhelmed.
Rebuild trust and connection in relationships. Reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.
If you’re in Lakewood, Denver, or the surrounding areas in Colorado, choosing a trauma-trained clinician increases the chance of lasting change.
Therapies That Work for Trauma and PTSD
At Elephant in the Room, our clinicians specialize in evidence-based trauma treatments that go beyond talk therapy:
1. Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) EMDR helps the brain “unstick” traumatic memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. It’s one of the most researched methods for PTSD and is recommended by the VA and APA.
2. Brainspotting Brainspotting uses eye positions to access trauma stored in the midbrain. This process often reaches deeper emotional material that talk therapy can’t.
3. Somatic & Body-Based Therapies Trauma lives in the body. Somatic approaches help release tension, regulate the nervous system, and restore a sense of safety.
4. Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) This structured approach blends trauma processing with skills for coping and managing triggers. Many of our clinicians integrate these methods, tailoring treatment to your unique needs.
Signs It’s Time to Seek Trauma Therapy
You don’t need a formal PTSD diagnosis to benefit from trauma-informed care. Common signs include: Flashbacks, nightmares, and/or intrusive memories. Feeling “on edge”, anxious or hypervigilant. Emotional numbness or dissociation. Relationship struggles or difficulty trusting others. Unexplained physical pain or tension. Feeling stuck in old patterns, despite your best efforts. If these sound familiar, you are not alone—and healing is possible.
How to Choose the Right Trauma Therapist in Colorado
When searching for a therapist near you, keep these questions in mind: Do they specialize in trauma and PTSD? (Look for EMDR, somatic therapy, or trauma-focused training). Do they have experience with complex trauma (CPTSD)? Not all trauma is from a single event—many of our clients have experienced long-term or developmental trauma. At Elephant in the Room, we accept Medicaid, and several private insurance plans. Do they offer both in-person and telehealth options? Flexibility matters, especially when managing symptoms of trauma.
